Contrary to common belief, even in Montana, summer days can be really hot. Luckily there are plenty of ways to cool off and get in the water around Big Sky. Here are some great, family-friendly, ways to beat the heat and stay cool this summer!
Lake Levinsky
Located at the base of Big Sky Resort, Lake Levinsky is the perfect spot for cooling off on a hot summer day. Rent a paddleboard, kayak, or pedal boat for an afternoon of relaxation exploring the small mountain lake. Or bring some fishing gear and search for some of Montana’s famous trout hiding in the water. Activities include:
- Fishing
- Paddleboarding
- Pedal boating
- Kayaking
- Swimming
Green Bridge
If you’ve ever driven from Bozeman to Big Sky on Highway 191, you’ve probably seen the Green Bridge. Located 6 miles outside of Big Sky on the Gallatin River, this bridge is perfect for jumping into the river. The water is deep and you can even jump from the top of the bridge. Activities include:
- Bridge jumping
- Fishing
- Swimming
Lava Lake
Lava Lake is a great adventure on a hot day in Big Sky. The hike takes you into the mountains where Lava Lake is hidden. This secluded lake has plenty of great shoreline where you can lounge out and eat a picnic lunch. Activities include:
- Swimming
- Fishing
- Cliff jumping
- Camping
Floating The Madison
Not only is the Madison River famous for its fly fishing, but hundreds of people also float the Madison every day in inner tubes. There is a 4-mile stretch of river that is perfect for groups of floaters, not too deep and a steady speed. Park at the upper parking lot and leave a car at the bottom lot as a shuttle (or if you only have one car you can normally find a ride or hitchhike easily). Innertubes can be found inexpensively at Walmart or for rent in Bozeman. Activities include:
- Floating
- Fishing
- Camping
Let us know if you beat the heat this summer! Enjoy your stay in Big Sky! And stay safe out there!
